Summary Of To Kill A Mockingbird

Summary of Chapter 8: The Coldest Winter Since 1885

For the first time in Maycomb’s history, the town experiences the coldest winter since 1885. The light snowfall makes the school decide to close for a few days, which is a very rare incident that can happen in Maycomb. The events as well as the snow on the ground make Scout think that it is already the end of the world.

The Snowman and Mr. Avery:

In this summary of to Kill a Mockingbird, Jem decides to build a snowman and invites Scout to gather as much snow from Miss Maudie’s place as she can. However, the snow that they can gather from their place and their neighbors’ place is not enough to make one big snowman. Jem decides to make a snowman from the combination of snow and dirt. He covers the dirt snowman structure with snow to make it look like a full pledge snowman. The snowman figure resembles Mr. Avery. Mr. Avery is a very unpleasant neighbor who lives down the street. Atticus sees the likeness clearly and demands that they disguise the figure. Jem puts the hat of Miss Maudie over the snowman’s head and put her hedge clippers on the snowman’s hands.

Miss Maudie’s House Burns Down:

Atticus wakes Scout. He tells her that the house next door is on fire. Miss Maudie’s house is on fire and they need to get out of their house too. The neighbors help Miss Maudie save some furniture while they watch and wait at the driveway of Boo’s house. Miss Maudie’s house all burned up but the fire truck arrives in time to prevent the fire from burning the neighbors’ houses.

Boo, Scout, and the Blanket:

The children spend the night at the driveway. During the commotion, someone put a blanket over Scout. Scout was horrified. She certainly has no idea who draped the blanket over her. Jem later realized that Boo put the blanket over her, which also explains the puzzle of the knothole treasures they receive from him. This includes the mended pants. In this summary of To Kill a Mockingbird, we also learn that Atticus asks the children to keep the event a secret. Scout later realize that Boo is right behind her while they are in the process of figuring out the blanket and the treasures, which almost make her throw up.

Miss Maudie’s Reaction:

They see that Miss Maudie is still happy despite the fact that she loses her house. She tells them that she wants a new smaller house anyway with a bigger garden. She hates her old house and is excited thinking of building the new one. She sighs expressing her desire to catch Boo putting the blanket over Scout.

How To Clean Chrome Barstools

Chrome barstools are very beautiful and sleek. Chrome is used to create a retro appearance but equally it is at home in compare of the cutting edge contemporary design styles, which we can present here for your consideration. Chrome barstools can offer a traditional static set and can also swivel. Chrome has stood the test of time by keeping its good looks and also by not corroding as it is a hard wearing and durable material. This is the reason why auto fenders are made from chrome. It is the retro 1950’s style statement both on the classic cars of the period and in the interiors.

Chrome is known to be tough, extra strong and is also built to last. Black Chromium is used to give dark coloring to chrome plating. On the other hand, hard chrome is used to restore parts of industrial equipment that have worn down, and to lower the amount of wear and friction on the equipment. The chrome, which consists of bright colors, creates a very shiny finish product whereas black chrome is used to give dark coloring to chrome plating. Chrome maintains a bright finish and also resists wear and is harder than the other metals. It also provides excellent protection. This is the reason why chrome barstools are stronger than the wooden bar stools.

Ideally chrome is best metal, which can be used to make barstools but it is also very important to maintain it. It is very important to constantly maintain the chrome barstools by wiping it quickly when there is a spill. To clean the chrome barstools water and mild soap are very useful. After the cleaning of this chrome barstool is done it should be completely dried. Some of this chrome when used in metal furniture can be just dusted, cleaned and polished with one action. You can even use a multi-surface polish, which will help you long way. Some of the barstools also consist of padding on the seats, as well as armrests. Majority of the barstools have no back, whereas some other models do. These chrome barstools will last the most and should be really taken care off by cleaning it regularly and care can even increase the life of these barstools.

There are four ways, which can be used for cleaning the chrome barstools such as:

* Vinegar: To clean chrome, wipe with a soft cloth dipped in undiluted white or cider vinegar.

* Baby Oil: Apply baby oil with a soft cloth and polish to remove stains from chrome trim on faucets, kitchen appliances, vehicles, etc.

* Aluminum Foil: Briskly scrub rust spots on car bumpers with a piece of crumpled aluminum foil, shiny side up. Also works well on the chrome shafts of golf clubs.

* Chrome faucets: are easily cleaned with soapy water. Rinse and wipe dry with a paper towel to restore luster. An old toothbrush helps get deposits of dirt out from under edges of faucet. For hard-to-remove spots, use silver polish, rinse, and wipe dry.

Evaporative Cooler Maintenance Tips – Change Pads Regularly

Through my years of working on evaporative coolers I have found that poor maintenance of cooler pad material probably contributes the most to premature deterioration of the entire cooler. Most owners feel they are saving money by leaving the old pads in the unit for as long as possible but, ultimately they are costing themselves much more money in the long run by having to change out the entire cooler years before they should have to change it. I will explain why this is usually the case. But first lets look at the different types of evaporative cooler media.

Differences in Evaporative Media

The most common pad material for evaporative coolers is aspen pad. These pads get their name because they are made of wood shavings from aspen trees. The aspen wood is then enclosed in plastic cheesecloth mesh sized for each evaporative cooler louver. Aspen pads are very commonly used because the aspen shavings absorb and release moisture very efficiently. By releasing more water into the passing air, the temperature drop using aspen pads is better than some other materials. Although these aspen pads are not as efficient as CELdek media, which is cellulose paper engineered into honeycomb shaped blocks. CELdek media generally comes in 8 in. and 12 in. thick blocks. Since the air passes through thicker material more water is absorbed which gives a greater temperature drop to the air. Since aspen pads are far less expensive to manufacture they are more commonly used in evaporative coolers.

Why Change Pads Regularly

So why should you change aspen pads every year even though they do not look that bad after one year? Your float valve lets many gallons of water into the cooler each day. As the water distributes over all the aspen pads it is constantly evaporating. This is good as it produces cool air. But on the other hand it is leaving all the original minerals from these gallons of water each day to keep building up in the cooler pan. As this heavily mineraled water pumps into the aspen pads, these pads hold much of the minerals. Remember in these types of coolers the aspen pad is in contact with the metal louvers. These minerals being held against the metal louvers can deteriorate the louvers years before they should.

Weigh the Costs

From my experience, most evaporative cooler owners do very little maintenance and complain that the coolers do not last long enough. Others, who do end of the year maintenance, drain and clean the cooler pan and feel they are taking good care of their cooler. But they are leaving a large amount of minerals in the cooler pads through the winter, waiting to deteriorate the metal as soon as the next cooling season starts. Residential cooler pads about cost about $7 each and depending on whether your cooler is a window mount, side draft or down draft roof top unit, you are only using 3 or 4 pads per cooler. Spending $20-$30 per year on aspen cooler pads can usually be far less expensive than buying and installing a new cooler years before you need to. I hope this help to think about changing your cooler pads each year.

How To Achieve A Country Style Hallway

The details may differ by country, but country style at its heart is an open, comforting, natural look. Vintage pieces and natural materials conjure images of life out where there is more land than people. English country style features neutral and pastel colours, in combination with the bare wood.

Hallways by nature are transitions. They serve to link together the various rooms of a house and are usually given only a passing thought. With hallway decorating less is more, but function and fashion can go hand in hand to achieve a comfortable inviting look.

Colours and Materials
Country style favours natural materials like wood and stone. If the function of the hallway necessitates some sort of easy to clean material like vinyl or linoleum, pick some that has a natural stone pattern. Metals should be used as accents only and kept dark and simple, like tin, iron, or copper. A little rust or patina is welcome and adds to the timeless vintage look of the room.

Hallways need to tie the rooms of the house together, and colour plays a big part in this. If using colours other than white, keep them muted unless they fit with the colour schemes around them. American country style uses reds and blues, but natural earthy colours also work. Leaving wood bare works well, and distressing the wood gives anything a nice vintage look. If the hallway or stairwell is small and closed, light colours will open it up and give it the illusion of space. Dark colours will likewise pull the walls and ceilings closer for a cosier feel.

Furniture and Decoration
The country style hallway is a functional space. For a front hallway key holders, coat stands, and hangers can add decoration as well as provide a lived-in look that will make visitors instantly feel at home. Go with wicker baskets rather than clunky wooden shelves. Slim open leaning ladder bookshelves will also help to keep the space light and airy, serving as an elegant and attractive storage solution.

Interior hallways that are large enough would do well with a bench or wicker chair in a corner or off to the side. Some seating will help to make the hallway feel like a room in its own right. Baskets can also be placed underneath for more storage.

Barn stars are also a great piece of decoration. Made of tin, they come in all sizes and look very good on a wall or hung on the sides of furniture. Add a little rust to age them up, and what was once on the side of a barn will look right at home on the wall of your hallway.

Candles make wonderful accent pieces. A nice scented candle on a simple dark metal or wood stand can fit in anywhere. A bit of potpourri to add more scent while the candle is out will keep the hallway smelling pleasant. Candles come in a variety of colours wide enough to fit into any scheme, and always add a bit of country charm.

Lighting
Proper lighting is important for real country style. Artificial lighting can throw a harsh glare through the hallway and ruin your hard decorating work. Use natural-looking incandescent bulbs instead of gas-based lighting like halogen and fluorescent. If the hallway has a window, use drapes instead of blinds to keep the window as unobstructed as possible. Let the outside light fill the hallway as much as possible. Keeping the wall and window frame white or a light colour will help shift focus to what lies beyond.

With a bit of paint and a few decorative touches here and there and perhaps some hall furniture, any hallway can become the warm heart of a cosy country home.

Choosing Between Laminate Flooring And Cork Tiles Flooring

There are different ways of doing flooring in your home. The option that you settle for will determine how elegant your home will look like, and the value that you will receive for the money spent on flooring. One of the most common flooring options today laminate flooring. It is also known as floating wood tile. It consists of melamine and thin layers of sheets. You may be cheated into thinking that it is wood flooring is you have not seen these types of floors before.

The protection in laminate flooring is done in such a way that it cannot be harmed by strong objects. For this reason, it can be considered durable and easy to maintain. Pets and pests cannot damage this floor because of the protective layer. Even in high-traffic areas, this floor does not get damaged. Still, cleaning this floor is easy. Just using a mop and soapy water will leave the floor sparkling clean.

People love to laminate floors because one gets the hardwood look into their space without necessarily having to spend a lot of money on it- laminate floors are cheap. Better yet, one does not have to have a lot of skills and experience in order to install the floor.

You can install laminate floors on anything- apart from carpeted floors. Still, it can be removed without damaging the existing floor. People who are passionate about environmental conservation find this floor very ideal; because one does not have to go for the hardwood to install flooring in their spaces.

Disadvantages of Laminate Flooring

One thing that makes laminate flooring undesirable is that you cannot customize it. The floor is set by the manufacturer, and you cannot create your own unique look with the floor. Still, the floor is not good in noise reduction, and you will be heard from afar off when you step on it. Further, you will not get the warmth that comes with other types of floors when you install it. More so, they are not good for the wet areas because the floor tends to warp when exposed to moisture.

Cork Tiles

If you are not comfortable with laminate floors, you may opt for cork tiles. This type of flooring is a very good alternative to laminate flooring because:
It is durable
It reduces sound
It comes in different designs and colors
It can be used in wet areas such as kitchen and bathrooms.
It is easy to maintain and clean.
However, there are some disadvantages that come with cork tiling such as:
It is expensive.
It requires experts to install it.
It can be damaged by sharp objects.
The Most Important Thing
Whether you choose to laminate floors or cork tiling, you should go for the option that offers you more advantages. You need to consider the general theme in your space before making a decision. Further, you need to ensure that you are opting for flooring that is within your budgets.

The Electric Organ Has Been Replaced By Arranger Keyboards

In recent years, electric organ sales have taken a battering at the hand of the mighty arranger keyboard such as the Yamaha Tyros. It’s a shame because the electric organ can do everything a keyboard can do and more. In my opinion, the organ is also more playable as a live instrument. Because of the bass pedals, you can play the organ without any auto chord or drum machine and get a very respectable sound.

The keyboard on the other hand would sound thin, definitely lacking without auto chord/bass. Of course, arranger keyboards are considerably cheaper than new organs and take up less room. This has created a new generation of keyboard players, some of which could never afford the hefty cost of an organ.

So is this the end for the electric organ. So how do organ manufacturers address this problem? Well they were and still are designed to be a piece of furniture. Great big lumps of wood, which appeal to the older generation, which is why they have the reputation of being an older person’s musical instrument. This need to be changed so they appeal to all generations. The next major change has to be the hefty cost. A top of the range electric keyboard such as the Yamaha Tyros would cost between two to three thousands pounds new. Top of the range organs from Yamaha and Roland can cost you between ten and twenty thousand pounds.

This change may have already started with new models from Yamaha with the Yamaha D-Deck organ and the top of the range Yamaha Electone Stagea. Both are portable and very modern looking. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information on these models unless you read Japanese. Yamaha have decided there is no organ market in the UK, Europe or the USA. So if you want one of these models you will have to import it yourself.

At the time of writing this, even these new modern looking organs are now out of date. As far as I am aware the Yamaha Stagea electone organ and Yamaha D-Deck organ do not have the “Super Articulation” that is available on the Yamaha Tyros 2 arranger keyboard. There are also a lot of brand new features on the latest crop of arranger keyboards, which include Roland G70, Korg PA 800 and the Ketron Audya, the latter, still a prototype.

So if you want an electric organ set up. You might be better of buying two arranger keyboards and a MIDI pedal board. It would be considerably cheaper than importing the Yamaha Stagea and you would be assured of the latest sounds and technological advancements.

Ways To Repurpose Old Traffic And Parking Signs

Go green. Its a phrase thats thrown around often these days, but you might be wondering what old traffic and parking signs have to do with this. How can you recycle these old and rusted signs? Here are ten creative ways you can reuse your old signs.

1.Decoration for your space. Old parking and traffic signs are a great way to add some pizzazz to any attic, basement or man cave. Even if the signs are slightly rusted or tarnished, that only adds more character to your decoration.
2.Construct unique furniture. Since traffic and parking signs are often made of aluminum or other bendable materials, you can form old signs into furniture fairly easily. For example, you might choose to create a chair or desk.
3.Recondition the signs. Depending on how much wear and tear your traffic and parking signs have been through, there are instances in which your signs could be resurfaced and cleaned to be brought back to life.
4.Create innovative household items. Besides constructing furniture out of old traffic and parking signs, you can also create other household items. For instance, some green artists have taken to cutting up old traffic signs to create things like coasters, light switch plates and much more.
5.Make one-of-a-kind wall art. Whether you choose to hammer an old parking or traffic sign directly into your wall, or opt to create a collage or mural of old signs, this type of artwork can be a great addition to any space.
6.Cut house numbers. Another innovative use for old traffic or parking signs is to cut out your house number from them. With house numbers like this, youll stand out from other houses on your block.
7.Make jewelry. You can create jewelry out of just about anything these days, and old signs are no exception. Since theyre easy to bend, take your old signs and make bracelets out of them.
8.Jazz up your refrigerator. Eco-friendly artists have been taking old traffic and parking signs and molding them into magnets for your refrigerator.
9.Make dinnerware. If youre looking for a great conversation piece for your next dinner party, consider making decorative and usable platters out of old traffic signs. Youll need to make sure they are cleaned and sanitized before serving any food.
10.Recycle them. If you cant find a particular use for them yourself, most traffic and parking signs can be recycled. Contact your local government for information on how and where to recycle your old signs.

When its time to replace your old traffic and parking signs, dont just throw them out. Get creative and find ways to repurpose your old signs.

Amendoim What Is It And How Does It Stack Up To Other Exotic Hardwoods

As exotic hardwood floors continue to gain in popularity, Amendoim is sprouting up as a popular hardwood flooring option. But what is it exactly, and where does it come from?

Amendoim is commonly referred to as Brazilian Oak, although another species, Tauari, is also called Brazilian Oak, which has lead to a great deal of confusion among the flooring industry. It is grown in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, and is also used to make fine furniture because it sands and shapes very well compared to other hardwoods.

Much like Brazilian Cherry, Amendoim has a reddish hue, but it has a more golden cast, particularly the sapwood. Amendoim Hardwood Floors have more swirls and rings than seen with Brazilian Cherry, but much like its sister specie, its soft brush strokes look as though they were painted on with watercolor. It will darken with sunlight, also like Brazilian Cherry Hardwood Floors, but its a much more subtle difference.

Also like Brazilian Cherry and other exotics, Amendoim is very, very strong, showing top ratings on the Janka hardness scale 1912, which is above maple and red oak, and equivalent to Santos Mahogany. Brazilian Walnut is considered the strongest at 3680.

Amedoim is available in both solid and engineered hardwoods, with some engineered collections offering very inexpensive options. Engineered products range from $2.89 per square foot to $6.69 depending on the finish, distressing techniques, plank width, and thickness.

You can find solid Amendoim floors ranging from $4.09 per square foot for smaller spaces up to $7.70 for 5 inch wide planks, which are typically the best sellers in all wood flooring products.

Price-wise, Amendoim is somewhat similar to Brazilian Cherry, perhaps a little more expensive, but much of that depends on what youre looking to do. Handscraped floors will cost more than smoother finishes regardless of the specie. Brazilian Cherry seems to have more engineered options on the market with cheaper prices, but if youre set on something solid, Amendoim is cheaper.

If youre still exploring your options for a floor, have a free hardwood floor sample sent to your home so you can actually see the product and cut of the wood. This is particularly important with Amendoim because you could either be getting the tan sapwood or the reddish heartwood. Some cuts have lots of swirls and others dont. You just want to be sure that youre getting what you pay for.

A reputable exotic flooring retailer can walk you through the selection process and help you figure out if Amendoim is right for your home.

Checklist For Opening A New Office Location

If you have started a small business from your home, there comes a time where you might need to open a new office location outside of your home. For this reason, it is helpful to have a checklist for opening a new office location because you could have a lot of details to complete, unless you are considering the advantages offered by executive office suites. Most situations will require you set up utilities, purchase office equipment, figure out kitchen lunch storage and arrange your data filing, storage and other details.

Executive office suites can eliminate many of these items because they will often furnish everything you need to operate a virtual office location, except office furniture and sometimes, they will sublease furnished spaces! If you consider the advantages of executive office suites, when compared to the many items on the checklist for opening a new office location, your list is much shorter and more affordable. Some of the amenities that might be furnished will include fax, copy and mailing services, secretarial services with call forwarding reception and even shared business centers, conference rooms and video-conferencing facilities are included, which could be items on your checklist, otherwise.

Another part of the checklist for opening a new office location might not include an on-site fitness center or indoor track, lounge or child-care facilities, but with executive office suites, it is possible these are already offered. There are a number of larger companies that will sublease executive office suites, but these are becoming a popular way to open a new location because they require little effort and the checklist is quite short. Otherwise, you will definitely need a checklist for opening a new office location, because the list can be quite long:

Desk, comfortable chair, file cabinets, lamps and overhead lighting
Client seating or reception area furniture
Fireproof safe to store valuable files, checks, cash
Calculators, labeling machine, postage meter, worktables, bookcases
Decorations, whiteboard and markers, wastebaskets, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit
Photocopier, paper shredder, alarm system, radio
Desktop computer, monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse, modem, CD writer, digital camera, PowerPoint projector, scanner, software programs, payment processing programs, desktop publishing, website building and accounting software
Telephone line, internet connection, toll-free line, telephones, fax machine, cordless phone, answering machine, speakerphone, tape recorder, cellphone with internet features, cordless headset
Business cards, stationery, envelopes, stamps, printer cartridges, floppy disk, pens and pencils, fax paper, file folders, scissors, staplers, notepads and miscellaneous supplies like paper clips, staples, white-out and any promo items.

As you can see, this is a general checklist for opening a new office location and there are quite a few things you could eliminate, if you consider the advantages of executive office suites. Since many of the office services are included, you may just need a modular desk and storage unit, along with your personal laptop and you are ready to set up shop. This could be the main reason that executive office suites have become a popular way to open a new office location!
